Perhaps your discipleship has been somewhat random, much like this photo.
Do we ever fully "arrive" as Christians? No, but if you believe in lifelong learning, this tool will reveal where you are on your journey as a follower of Christ. You will continue working on the themes outlined in this sheet for the rest of your life. However, when you review this tool, and then find someone to discuss it with, the process should help clarify a few next steps you'll want to take.
1) 10 minutes reviewing the CCO's "Strategy of Discipleship" sheet. And then...
2) 10 minutes of reflection, prayerfully considering which one or two areas you think are most important for you to spend time working on next. Then list them as you answer the three questions at the top of the sheet. Either print out the sheet or enter your answers in your phone notes.
A final point before you begin this Session. Do you realize that whenever we encourage others to consider trusting Christ for the first time, or we encourage fellow Christians to grow in their faith, we are becoming more effective disciples (followers) of Christ ourselves?
STRATEGY OF DISCIPLESHIP SHEET This modified CCO tool identifies many areas Jesus where Jesus wants us to grow. As you read page 2, remember that if we are committed to lifelong learning, we will always be a "student." We should not settle for a lesser form of cultural Christianity and miss out on God's plans for us.
Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
Ephesians 2:10, NIV: "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Ephesians 2:10, ESV: "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."
We all want to be effective followers of Christ who have an outward "Kingdom of God" focus. This tool will help you and me get there.
REPORTING IN: First, list your one or two areas and a few beginning action steps you plan to take. Second, think about those people who have discipled you. What did their investment in you look like? How did you grow as a result? Has it resulted in an increased concern for others? Third, I'd like you to reflect on how well you think you were (or are) being discipled / mentored. Fourth, I'd like you to list a few peers who are challenging you to grow. I can't tell you how many times people look back and point to a few peer relationships that were pivotal in their growth. And don't forget Jesus wants you to be that person in someone else's life too!! (Actually more than one, but it's a start, right?)
